Am I Going to Die Tonight?

A few years ago I found myself sitting in a hospital room asking a question I never expected to ask:
"Am I going to die tonight?"
What started as pain became something much bigger.
Tests.
Specialists.
Procedures.
Conversations I never thought I would have.
That experience taught me lessons that apply far beyond healthcare.
First, reality does not care whether we acknowledge it.
Ignoring a problem rarely solves it.
Whether it's your health, your relationships, or your business, the warning signs are usually there long before the crisis arrives.
Second, every complex situation needs an advocate.
At one point I had specialists focused on every part of my condition.
What I lacked was someone focused on the whole picture.
Businesses experience the same challenge.
Sales sees one thing.
Marketing sees another.
Operations sees something else entirely.
Who is looking at the complete picture?
Who is connecting the dots?
Who is making sure everyone is moving toward the same outcome?
Finally, I learned how easy it is to become a number.
Customers feel it.
Employees feel it.
Patients feel it.
People want to know they matter.
At Kilman Advisors, those lessons shape everything we do.
Face reality.
Align the team.
Never forget the people behind the metrics.
The rest gets much easier.
